Over the last year, I’ve learned that one can practice yoga and not practice proper alignment while doing it. Warrior III is an example of this. According to Hatha Yoga Illustrated by Brooke Boon & Martin Kirk, Warrior III contains the following benefits:
- Strengthens the feet, ankles, calves, knees and thighs
- Improves circulation
- Enhances muscular endurance
- Improves balance
- Stretches the hips and groin.
However, without proper alignment in this pose, the above benefits are not as fully achieved.
The following video discusses common dysfunctions that present itself in Warrior III, such as bending one’s knee and shifting one’s pelvis forward. It also looks at how to over come these dysfunctions and bring proper alignment into this great yoga pose. When you begin to combine yoga poses and proper alignment, one’s practice/poses become totally new and often times more difficult.
